SWIFT CURRENT AND AREA

We live in Swift Current, Saskatchewan ... a small city in sunny South West Saskatchewan!!  Swift Current has a population of just over 16,000 and we enjoy an average of approximately 2200 hours of sunlight per year:-)  The Swift Current trading area's main industries consist of agriculture (grain & livestock),  western Saskatchewan mineral & oil exploration, and manufacturing.

My husband and son also enjoy a mini-vacation of a snakey sort....  They like to take a day trip down to Grasslands National Park (by Val Marie, Saskatchewan) in the Spring or in the Fall, when the snakes are making their way out of or back into the pits.....  Not my idea of a good time, but they enjoy it very much!  They have seen Prairie Rattlesnakes (always the highlight of their trips!), as well as the Prairie Dogs, Coyotes, Pronghorn Antelope, White-tailed Deer, Rock Wrens, Eastern Bluebirds, Sage Grouse, Western Meadowlarks, Horned Larks, Prairie Falcon, unidentified hawks, Dark-Eyed Juncos, and many other wildlife found on the Saskatchewan Prairies.  Prairie native grass, Prairie Crocus (in early Spring), Prickly Pear Cactus, and wild roses (Prickly Rose and Prairie Rose) are a common sight in this area, along with many other prairie flowers, shrubs, and grasses......

It is now official... Grasslands National Park is Saskatchewan's second National Park!!  This was achieved with the new Canada National Parks Act that received Royal Assent on October 20, 2000 and Proclamation on Febuary 19, 2001.

For a nice short day-trip, we have the Saskatchewan Landing Provincial Park a half hour North of Swift Current.  This is a Provincial Park along the South Saskatchewan River.  Here we have found some great birding (we have identified 40+ birds there in a single weekend of camping, and it seems each time we go there, we discover others we haven't seen there before, and sometimes we find one we've never seen before and can add it to our updatedLifelist!!  There are various species of wildlife, including both Mule and White-tailed Deer, Porcupines, Brown Bats, Leopard Frogs, 13-Lined Ground Squirrels, Richardson's Ground Squirrels, Nuttall's Cottontails, White-tailed Jack Rabbits, and other animals...  There are also Rattlesnakes, Bull Snakes, and Garter Snakes there (to the approval of my husband and our son!)   There is also an array of prairie plant life, from typical prairie grasses to the beautful Prairie Crocus (in Spring) and the Prickly Pear & Pincushon Cacti!!    Check out our Sask Landing PhotoGallery to view photos of the Prickly Pear Cactus in bloom!
